Router Help!Posted: Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:09 pm    Subject: Router Help! Reply with quote

Phone lines downstairs... laptops/ps3s used upstairs, signal is very low or sometimes cant even find my wireless internet... Brought the router upstairs by a 40m phone line extension...
Just wondering if theres any other way to bring the router signal to upstairs? I wanna put the router back downstairs, download speed there is 13mb (sky net) with the extension download speed is 8/9Mb

Anyone got any help?
I found this product called "Home Plug" would that be any good?

Cheers to anyone who replies! Thumb Up!

First thing is, is the phone line/microfilter setup correct... most people's aren't... too much of a tendency to take the lazy/unthinking option of putting microfilters on every socket, which leaves the whole of the house phone wiring loading the line down.

The way it should be done is that NOTHING is connected to the master socket apart from the microfilter. Then all the extension sockets are plugged into the microfilter. If this involves disconnecting the extension wiring from the master socket and fitting a plug to it then so be it. The router is then located close to the master socket.

To distribute the broadband about the house by far the best way is to forget about wireless and just run Cat 5e...

If you absolutely have to have wireless you could run Cat 5e from the router up the stairs to another router which is used only as an ethernet-to-wireless bridge.

Those "Home Plug" things and similar products do seem to work by all accounts though.

Or just Reset the router and then re-set it again using a Ethernet cable and your computer. It runs well faster after.
